BALTIC WRITERS’ COUNCIL ÖSTERSJÖNS FÖRFATTARRÅD
Baltic Meetings on Gotland May 16-19, 2007
The 2005 Baltic Meetings in Kaliningrad, comprising more than 40 participants from the Baltic Countries plus 80 delegates from the Russian city of Kaliningrad, were indeed a great success. On the spot the decision was made to continue the Baltic Meetings, as arranged by the BWC, with Gotland as the next meeting-place.
During Ascension Day 2007, writers, translators, and cultural politicians will congregate for an open dialogue, consisting of seminars, round-table discussions, and literary readings, the topic being a new mutual Baltic identity. Among the participants are P. O. Enquist, Andrey Bitov, Vladimir Tarasov, Nora Ikstena, Steinunn Sigurdardóttir and Argita Daudze.
“...our contemporary Europe with its horrible old history as rucksack during the journey”, a quotation from P. O. Enquists novel Legionärerna (The Legionnaires), is the conference motto, phrasing its overall theme: Culture and politics after the changes in the Baltic Sea region. During the first day of the conference, delegates from the Nordic Artists’ associations will also participate, in connection with their annual Nordic Cultural Parliament session.
On Thursday (May 17), the delegates will meet in an “Open Forum”, for the purpose of discussing, in small groups, topics such as female literature, the freedom of expression, cultural cooperation in the future, and the implementation of the UNESCO Convention on Cultural Diversity.
Friday (May 18) is reserved for excursions in small groups to the North, South, West and East of Gotland, on the tracks of Linnaeus, Sven Delblanc, Tarkovsky and Enquist. After returning to Visby, a Long Night of Baltic Sea literature, readings, recitals etc. will take place at different venues, among others the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators.
The conference will be accomplished on Saturday (May 19 ) with final conclusions and perspectives for the future, upcoming Baltic Meetings in St. Petersburg in 2009.
The Baltic Meetings have received support from SIDA Östersjöenheten, Statens kulturråd Stockholm, the Swedish Academy, Swedish Institute, Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators Visby and Institusjonen Fritt Ord Oslo.
