Sifting through the photos of this infinitely eventful year, searching for a picture that’s fitting for a heartfelt seasonal greeting to send out into the world, we picked out this one, - calm, balanced, and telling a story, a Visby winter story. But looking closer I realized there’s more than one story in the picture. There is a colour daub on the left, a rose ochre house peeping out in the aperture between the saturated tree trunks.
It looks tiny on the photo, but behind the colour daub the house has a volumnious body, spreading itself, unbothered by its architectonic mishmash, over the corner of two crossing streets, which makes it be listed on both.
A well-informed acquaintance once told me, and other reliable sources have confirmed, that Selma and Sophie rented rooms in this very house when they first came to Visby. That is Selma Lagerlöf and Sophie Elkan, and the year was 1894.
They returned a few years later. This time they rented two small rooms in the attic of the mansionlike house just across of "ours", the one in the photo. They stayed long, more than two months, prolonged their stay into September; delayed summer guests - "försenade sommargäster", Selma writes. They set up a pretty tough work schedule: they worked all morning, went to the Pavilion at the Botanical Garden for a meal around four o'clock, then back to work, and it wasn't until after six that they put down pen and paper and wandered off to some beautiful spot outside the walls, where one sat down to read aloud while the other looked out over "the flowery ground, the old towers that rose so carelessly into the air, and the wide blue Visby sea".
Not much different from the way BCWT fellows organize their working routines today.
One day in August Sophie came in with a local newspaper. For the beauty of a research a meticulous journalist made a rigorous diving into the archives and stated that the little article Sophie wanted her friend to see had been published in Gotlänningen.
Gotlänningen which still exists. In another form and as in Gotlänningens Tryckeri AB, that awarded BCWT with honorable Free Press Prize earlier this year. Talk about serendipity…
The article was about the farmers from Nås in Dalarna who seeking salvation from the end of the world had emigrated to Jerusalem, and had now begun to settle in their new country.
Selma saw a wonderful novel topic taking shape. Soon after they started planning for a big trip – to Jerusalem, and in December 1899 the journey southwards, by train through a wintry Europe, began.
Visby. Gotlänningen. Jerusalem. Then and now. Search and you will find.
It’s beginning to look a lot like a chistmas tale, en julberättelse. About houses, a town on an island, writers in retreat and a big world that’s there to be told about.
And if only to replace ”upper veranda of the pavilion” with ”the house on the cliff” the following words of Selma Lagerlöf seem like a perfect (and symbolic) fit:
”There is no more beautiful place in Visby than the upper veranda of the pavilion. It is so high, that from there you can look out over both the wall and tree tops and have the whole sky clear and open in front of you. When people come up there, they draw in their breath, as if their chests had been relieved of a weight, and their eyes begin to shine with joy at being able to look out so far and so wide without the slightest hindrance.”

The Baltic and East European Graduate School (BEEGS) is a part of
Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) at Södertörn University in Stockholm.
Just nu vistas den ukrainska poeten Julia Musakovska på Författarcentret i Visby.
Julia har publicerat fem diktsamlingar. Hennes poesi har översatts till ett trettiotal språk,
och våren 2023 utkom hennes dikter på svenska i boken STENAR OCH SPIK.
Julia är även översättare av svensk poesi, bl a Tomas Tranströmer.
Nu på lördag, 21 oktober, samlas husets gäster för att ta del av Julia Musakovskas poesi,
och Centret välkomnar andra intresserade att göra oss sällskap.

KOLLEKTIV NORDEN på Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators!
KOLLEKTIV NORDEN är et kollektivt bestillingsverk med nordiske stemmer som alle preges av sterke kunstneriske viljer; Tale Næss (NO), Henning H. Bergsvåg (NO), Fatemeh Ekhtesari (NO/IRAN), Jonas Eika (DK), Timimie Märak (SÁPMI) med Idun Vik (NO) som dramaturg.
Uppehållet vid Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators initierades av Cornerstone, en plattform för en ny scenkonst med bas i Bergen, Norge.
Prosjektet består av fysiske og digitale seminarer så vell som felles skriveworkshops. Som en del av utviklingen äger ett uppehåll hos Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators rum.
Cornerstone ser for sig at et opphold hos BCWT kan bane vei for kreativ nytenkning – en møteplass for språklige og menneskelige erfaringer der virkeligheten ikke tilhører én, men mange.

Fulladdade dagar på Östersjöns författar- och översättarcentrum i Visby
Författare från Belarus Hanna Jankuta, Barys Pjatrovitj och Dmitrij Strotsev läser sin poesi på Almedalsbiblioteket den 5 maj.
Den 6 maj uppmärksammar Östersjöns författar- och översättarcentrums 30 år av sin verksamhet med ett publikt rundabordssamtal om litteraturens kraft, "ett eget rum", oroliga tider, yttrandefrihet, kulturdiplomati och ÖFÖCs roll och plats mitt i allt detta.
Programmen arrangeras av Östersjöförfattarnas råd och Östersjöns författar- och översättarcentrum, - i samarbete med Almedalsbiblioteket och i anslutning till Rådets generalförsamling den 5-6 maj.
Östersjöförfattarnas råd är en sammanslutning av 21 författar- och översättarorganisationer i Östersjöländerna och Norden, och har sitt högkvarter i Visby vid Östersjöns författar- och översättarcentrum.

Publikt program med Afşin Kum på Östersjöns författar- och översättarcentrum
Som ett resultat av det spännande samarbetet mellan Kulturhuset KIRAATHANE i Istanbul, Östersjöns författar- och översättarcentrum samt Svenska Forskningsinstitutet i Istanbul befinner sig just nu den turkiske författaren Afşin Kum på Författarcentret i Visby.
Hans roman Sicak Kafa (Hot Skull) från 2016 ligger till grund för Netfixserien med samma namn.
Även hans senaste roman Kübra filmatiseras just nu för Netflix, och precis i dagarna har filmandet påbörjats.
Afşin Kum är född 1972 i Izmir men bor sedan länge i Istanbul.
Afşin är även låtskrivare, musiker och programmerare.
