20-21 januari står ÖFÖC/BCWT som värd för ett Nätverksmöte med nordiska PEN.
Mötet kommer bland annat att handla om situationen för modersmål och flerspråkighet i Norden, språkliga rättigheter i Sápmi – historia, samtid, framtid.
Tanken är också att under mötet bilda ett Språknätverk för de Nordiska PEN-medlemmarna.

We are looking forward to hosting a network meeting with Nordic PEN-centres.
The meeting, which takes place at BCWT on 20-21 January, will focus on the situation of mother tongues and multilingualism in the Nordic countries, language rights in Sápmi - history, present, future.
The idea is also to form a language network for Nordic PEN members during the meeting.

Remembering Maksym Kryvtsov
A reading and conversation with translators Larissa Babij and Helena Kernan, right now working at the BCWT

On January 22, Maksym Kryvtsov, Ukrainian poet and photographer, would have turned 35. He was killed last year while defending his homeland from Russia's ongoing attack. Kryvtsov used plain language to capture the sensation of existing on the threshold between life and death. His visceral poetry invites readers to glimpse his experiences at the front, while highlighting the life that persists in the darkness of war. Larissa Babij and Helena Kernan, who are translating Kryvtsov’s poetry collection Virshi z biynytsi (Poems from the fire trench) into English while in residency at the BCWT, will share Kryvtsov’s poetry in English and discuss the phenomenon of Ukrainian literature being written on the frontlines.
Maksym Kryvtsov (1990–2024), was a poet and photographer, who spent the better part of his adult life in the military, defending Ukraine. He participated in the Revolution of Dignity while completing his studies in Kyiv, and joined the volunteer defenders of eastern Ukraine in 2014. Kryvtsov’s poetry collection Virshi z biynytsi (Poems from the fire trench) was published in 2023 and named one of the year’s best Ukrainian books by PEN Ukraine.
His poems have been published in numerous anthologies and Ukrainian bands have turned some of them into popular songs. The Minefield of Memory: Diaries, Essays, Stories—a posthumous collection of Kryvtsov’s writing in Ukrainian—was published in 2025 by Nash Format.
Larissa Babij is a Ukrainian–American translator and writer based in Kyiv since 2005. Her work has been published in The Evergreen Review, Arrowsmith Journal, London Ukrainian Review, Krytyka, and other publications.
A Kind of Refugee: The Story of an American Who Refused to Leave Ukraine, a book based on her dispatches on Substack from wartime Ukraine (https://akindofrefugee2022.substack.com/), was published by ibidem Press in 2024.
Helena Kernan is a literary translator of Ukrainian and holds master’s degrees from the University of Cambridge and the University of California, Berkeley. Originally from the UK, she has lived in several European cities including Kyiv, where she worked with the Theatre of Displaced People and Centre for Civil Liberties, and is now based in Berlin. She works with a wide variety of texts, from contemporary Ukrainian drama to poetry, documentary films, witness testimonies and editorial pieces.
